What Is Neurodivergence?
Neurodivergence broadly refers to variations in neurological development and functioning that differ from typical cognitive patterns. Common forms include Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and sensory processing differences. Neurodivergence isn't a disorder; it's a biological fact. However, it can affect how adults see, manage, and react to stress, emotions, and sensory input.
The autonomic nervous system and regulation
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls automatic body functions — heart rate, breathing, digestion, and stress responses. When the balance between activation and rest gets disrupted over time, it causes nervous system dysregulation: chronic stress, emotional instability, and sensory overload.
Evidence in neurodivergent adults
Research comparing adults with neurodiversity to neurotypical controls shows notable differences in ANS activity, particularly during rest. Adults with autism often show higher sympathetic activation and different parasympathetic patterns. A systematic review of autonomic function in adults with ADHD reveals altered modulation of the ANS. Neurodivergent adults are also more likely to experience forms of autonomic dysfunction such as orthostatic intolerance.
Why these connections matter
It helps explain lived experiences, guides support strategies, and reframes challenges nonpathologically — dysregulation as a difference in how the nervous system is wired, not a flaw.
What makes Alchemy: Rewire different?
Alchemy: Rewire uses the breath as a direct entry point into nervous system regulation and neuroplastic change. At its core is intentional breathwork, cultivating CO₂ tolerance through guided breath holds in a controlled, supported environment. Over time, these experiences reinforce new neural pathways associated with calm, adaptability, and recovery — neuroplasticity in action.
Feel the method for yourself
