Nervous system regulation refers to your body’s ability to move between states of activation and rest. It is how your system responds to stress, recovers from it, and returns to a sense of safety and balance. You can thank your nervous system for controlling basic bodily functions. Think: salivation, adrenaline production, digestion, orgasm, and more.

When your nervous system regulates, you feel alert but not anxious. You are calm without shutting down. You also feel resilient against daily challenges. When you're disregulated, even small stressors can feel overwhelming or exhausting. Consider the more basic functions of the body, the ones you often overlook until they fail to work optimally. Healthy nervous system regulation and vagal tone are imperative for living a full life. This process is largely governed by the autonomic nervous system. Think of it as operating automatically behind the scenes to maintain your life and bodily functions.

Understanding the autonomic nervous system

The autonomic nervous system has two primary branches that work together. They work together in a sort of balancing system. The parasympathetic nervous system handles bodily actions that help you rest. The PNS constricts your pupils, causes salivation, slows down your heart rate, and initiates digestion. Meanwhile, you can thank the sympathetic system for actions that activate your body. Think: speeding up the heart, widening the bronchi, inhibiting digestion, and keeping the bladder from contracting.

Sympathetic nervous system (activation)

Often referred to as the fight-or-flight response, this branch mobilizes energy. It increases heart rate, sharpens focus, and prepares the body to respond to perceived threats.

This response is not bad by its nature. It's necessary for motivation, focus, and survival. Problems arise when it stays switched on for too long. Self-regulation tools matter. They help keep the nervous system healthy, beyond just promoting longevity.

Parasympathetic nervous system (rest and repair)

This branch supports rest, digestion, healing, and emotional regulation. It allows the body to slow down and recover after stress. Nervous system regulation is not about eliminating stress. It is about flexibility and balance between these two states.

A simple way to recall their functions is this: the parasympathetic nervous system is the “rest and digest” side. In contrast, the sympathetic side is the “fight or flight” response.”

What happens when the nervous system dysregulates?

Chronic stress, trauma, lack of rest, and constant stimulation can disrupt the nervous system’s natural rhythm. When this happens, the body may get stuck in patterns of hyperarousal or shutdown.
